Fashion experience: Martin Margiela documentary

I like fashion, I have studied fashion. But, the thing that most impresses me is the behind the scene of “The Empire”. A brilliant mind is at the back of a brand that creates fabulous collections. More interesting gets when we can discover the way of thinking of the creator, but we will never see his face.

Who is this person? Is the emblem of anonymity and the avant-garde: Martin Margiela, the founder of Maison Margiela. I had the pleasure to assist in the Evening of Fashion Screening at McCord Stewart Museum organized by FIFA, where they presented the documentary Martin Margiela: In His Own Words.

The movie lasted ninety minutes. It shows the spectacular portrait of the Belgian designer who made an impact on the Parisian fashion scene in the 90s. The theater, where the event takes part, was full of people of all ages, but most of them were fashion students.

The experience was memorable because I could learn more about the history of fashion.

Margiela in Montreal?

Well, unfortunately, there is not a boutique of Maison Margiela in town. But there are two places where we can find some of his creations. At La Baie d’Hudson, we can find Replica: a perfume collection that is a “reproduction of familiar scents and moments of varying locations and periods”.

The second place is at SSENSE. Online or in their boutique at Old Port, we can find unique pieces of Maison Margiela.
